Introduction
With only a few hours remaining before the curtains fall on the Tamil Nadu election campaign, the air is thick with slogans. Under the singular banner of defeating the BJP and ensuring the victory of 'secular' forces, the DMK-led alliance and several social organizations are campaigning with fervor.
However, for our social fabric, the term "Religious Harmony" is a far more accurate and resonant ideal than mere "Secularism."
While the ideological stance of opposing the BJP is valid, in the theatre of practical politics, it often serves as a convenient smokescreen to hide a grave democratic crisis.
The Betrayal Masked by Ideology
Under the pretext of anti-BJP rhetoric, voters are being asked to vote 'blindly' without scrutinizing the candidate's character or track record. Is this not a betrayal of the people?
Ideology might define a nation's path, but it is the candidate's integrity and grassroots work that determine a constituency's future. Supporting a corrupt or unworthy candidate solely for the sake of an 'Alliance' is a calculated deception of the electorate.
In such scenarios, identifying and supporting an honest Independent candidate with a firm anti-BJP stance is the only moral alternative.
The Exploitation of Minorities
Minority communities are often cornered into voting in one specific direction by amplifying the fear of the BJP. Yet, once the dust of the election settles, the elected representative often pivots toward amassing personal wealth and consolidating power. The very people who voted for 'protection' find their basic needs ignored, eventually being forced to beg those same representatives for their rightful amenities.
The Responsibility of Progressive Movements
Progressive and revolutionary organizations must refuse to be reduced to mere 'vote-gathering machines' for major parties. It is intellectually dishonest to compel the public to support a tainted candidate. True progressive politics lies in identifying and championing worthy alternative candidates and honest Independents who truly represent the people’s voice.
A Lesson from the Ranipet Campaign
During my campaign trail in the Ranipet Constituency, the message from the ground was clear: People are yearning for change, but their choices are being artificially restricted. While opposing the BJP is a crucial political necessity, using it as an excuse to elect an unworthy individual as an MLA is a disservice to democracy.
Conclusion
Voting is not just a ritual; it is a powerful right. This right should be exercised for the welfare of the constituency, not in blind surrender to a party or an alliance. While we must oppose the BJP and its direct or indirect political maneuvers, we must also find the courage to reject unworthy candidates within the so-called 'Progressive Camp.'
We do not need a 'Secular' politics that protects self-seekers; we need a politics of 'Religious Harmony' that genuinely uplifts the lives of the common man.
